What is a split sheet?
A short agreement signed by everyone who wrote a song. It lists each writer and the percentage of the song (the composition) they own. Publishers, labels and collection societies use it to pay royalties to the right people.
How do most writers split a song?
Many rooms split evenly between everyone who contributed, regardless of who wrote which line. Others split by contribution. Either is fine as long as everyone agrees and signs.
Does a producer get a share of the song?
Only if they contributed to the writing, such as melody, lyrics or core musical parts. Producers are often paid separately through a fee and points on the master recording.
What is an IPI number?
An IPI (Interested Party Information) number is the ID your performing rights organization gives you when you join. You'll find it in your ASCAP, BMI, SESAC or GMR account.
Is this legally binding?
A signed split sheet is widely used as evidence of an agreement between writers, but it isn't legal advice. For large deals, have an entertainment attorney review your paperwork.
