How to release a song independently: the checklist

Most release mistakes come from rushing. Working backwards from your release date gives you time to get the paperwork right and pitch properly.

4 to 6 weeks before

Finish and sign the split sheet with every writer. Upload the song, artwork and credits to a distributor such as DistroKid, TuneCore or CD Baby. Your distributor will usually assign the recording an ISRC code. Uploading early leaves time for editorial pitching.

3 to 4 weeks before

Once the release appears in Spotify for Artists, submit an editorial pitch. Spotify requires pitches at least 7 days before release, but earlier is better. Set up a pre-save link and start teasing the song on social media.

1 to 2 weeks before

Register the song with your performing rights organization and The MLC using the same percentages as your split sheet. Send your press kit to blogs and independent playlist curators.

Release week

Post on release day, share with fans and your email list, and thank anyone who playlisted or wrote about the song. Keep promoting for a few weeks after, since streaming algorithms respond to sustained activity.
